That this House celebrates the life of Father Austin Smith, who died on 24 March 2011; acknowledges and is grateful for his 40 years of ministry within the Toxteth community and the positive influence he achieved at local, national and international level; recognises his deep understanding of community relations; and remembers with affection and respect his commitment to the poorest people in society and his determination to uphold human rights and overcome racism in all its forms.

I first met Austin in 1942. We were both at junior seminary together. Later we were fellow students for over 6 years. He was a remarkable colleague. ‘Tho I seldom met him after ’53, I have fond memories of a good, holy, humble gifted man of God.
